OpenWrt-based Linux ecosystem release note

Applicable for STM32MP13x lines, STM32MP15x lines, STM32MP21x lines, STM32MP23x lines, STM32MP25x lines

Important
OpenWrt-based Linux distribution is validated against the ecosystem release v6.1.0 (see release note). It has not been ported yet on ecosystem release v6.2.1 .
Partner program
Bootlin has developed specific support, demonstration configurations, and documentation to help ST customers use OpenWrt on STM32 MPU platforms.

This article describes the content of the last release of the OpenWrt-based Linux ecosystem based on Yocto-based OpenSTLinux BSP v6.1.0.

1. Ecosystem content[edit | edit source]

The OpenWrt-based Linux ecosystem releases aim at:

  • providing a full ecosystem for the STM32MP1 series and STM32MP2 series
  • working efficiently with STM32 MPU boards , using OpenWrt-based Linux embedded software provided by STMicroelectronics' partner.

This ecosystem release consists of:

  • STM32 referenced tools
    • STM32CubeIDE
    • STM32CubeMX
    • Programming tools
      • STM32CubeProgrammer
        • Keygen tool
        • Signing tool
        • Trusted package creator tool
      • STM32PRG-TOOLBOX
        • STM32PRG-TOOLBOX-DFU
        • STM32PRG-TOOLBOX-FB

2. Scope of OpenWrt version based on OpenSTLinux BSP v6.1.0[edit | edit source]

This OpenWrt-based Linux ecosystem release is dedicated to the STM32MP1 series and STM32MP2 series.

The purpose on this release is :

  • to update this ecosystem with the Yocto-based OpenSTLinux BSP v6.1.0.
  • to update this ecosystem with OpenWrt 24.10.6.

6. Embedded software[edit | edit source]

6.1. OpenWrt-based_Linux_embedded_software[edit | edit source]

The OpenWrt-based Linux® embedded software is part of the STM32 MPU embedded software offer.
It is a set of software (see architecture overview), system build and development tools created to ease the development to be done on top of STM32 MPU devices.

It is made up of:

  • an open-source Linux® distribution, based on the OpenWrt framework, running on the Arm® Cortex®-A processor(s),
  • firmwares, running on the Arm® Cortex®-M processor: FwST-M Packages (not supported for STM32MP13x lines )

OpenWrt[1] is a Linux operating system targeting embedded devices. OpenWrt provides a fully writable filesystem with package management. OpenWrt is the framework to build an application without having to build a complete firmware around it; for users this means the ability for full customization, to use the device in ways never envisioned.

The Linux® distribution relies on the OpenSTLinux board support package (U-Boot, TF-A, OP-TEE, Linux kernel) complemented with a user-space with a features set.

The partner's repository[2] is "OpenWrt feed"[3] dedicated to supporting the STMicroelectronics STM32MPU platforms.

Several examples of OpenWrt configurations[4] are provided:

  • the minimal configuration relies on the OpenSTLinux BSP[5]: TF-A, U-Boot, OP-TEE, Linux
  • "demo" configurations include additional packages like a web interface to configure the device

This feed also shows how use the OpenWrt image Builder and how to run benchmarks[6].
