OpenBMC-based Linux ecosystem release note

Applicable for STM32MP21x lines, STM32MP23x lines, STM32MP25x lines

1. Ecosystem content[edit | edit source]

The OpenBMC-based Linux ecosystem releases aim at:

  • providing a full ecosystem for the STM32MP1 series and STM32MP2 series
  • working efficiently with STM32 MPU boards , using OpenBMC-based Linux embedded software provided by STMicroelectronics' partner.

This ecosystem release consists of:

2. Scope of OpenBMC version based on OpenSTLinux BSP v6.2.0[edit | edit source]

The OpenBMC-based Linux-ecosystem OSTL-6.2.0_OBMC-2.18 release is dedicated to the STM32MP2 series.

OpenBMC-based Linux ecosystem is provided by ST as example.

The targeted audience is STM32MP2 series customers and partners.

5. Supported development boards[edit | edit source]

Two ST boards are included in the OpenBMC distribution as examples:

  • STM32MP257F-EV1 [1] that supports both eMMC and SNOR flash memories.
  • STM32MP257F-DK [2] that supports eMMC flash memory.

6. Embedded software[edit | edit source]

In the table below, for each STM32 MPU device, you can find on which Cortex® the embedded software are running.

6.1. OpenBMC-based Linux embedded software[edit | edit source]

The OpenBMC-based Linux® embedded software is part of the STM32 MPU embedded software offer.
It is a set of software (see architecture overview) created to ease the integration of our STM32 MPU devices inside the OpenBMC[3] project.

It is made up of:

  • an open-source Linux® distribution, based on the OpenBMC community project, running on the Arm® Cortex®-A processor(s).
  • firmwares, running on the Arm® Cortex®-M processor: FwST-M Packages

OpenBMC[3] is a Linux operating system targeting embedded devices.OpenBMC includes a collection of applications and services that address BMC functional requirements. It is most commonly deployed on a companion chip paired with a server processor, where it provides a management interface between the administrator and the server. The BMC is also responsible for managing the chassis, firmware updates, sensor management, and access control.

The Linux® distribution relies on the OpenSTLinux board support package (U-Boot, TF-A, OP-TEE, Linux kernel) complemented with a user-space with a features set brought by OpenBMC.

The OpenBMC forked repository[4] is delivered on the official STMicroelectronics GitHub[5].

6.1.1. OpenBMC-based Linux Distribution for Arm® Cortex®-A[edit | edit source]

Updated OpenBMC v2.18.0 is the version delivered with the OpenBMC-based Linux-ecosystem OSTL-6.2.0_OBMC-2.18.

6.1.2. FwST-M packages for Arm® Cortex®-M[edit | edit source]

The release notes give information and details about the features / content / restrictions of the Packages.

Since OpenBMC-based Linux ecosystem-v6.1.0, the TF-M is no more supported.

They do not explain how to download the software. For that, refer to How to download the software and start with this release chapter.

The tools version has to match the version of the ST BSP components, aka Yocto-based OpenSTLinux BSP v6.2.0, available in Yocto-based OpenSTLinux ecosystem release note - v6.2.0#Development tools.
